1971 Yamaha RT1

It was 32 below at the top. I wore ski goggles and gloves. The key was jetting—I lived nearby, so I knew the right setting.
— Robb Talbott

On New Year’s Day in 1971, museum founder Robb Talbott entered a “Snow Run,” put on by the Dusters MC, up the famed Pikes Peak outside Colorado Springs. He rode his modified 360cc Yamaha RT-1. It was 25 degrees when the race started at 9,000 feet elevation. “There were 224 riders in different classes, and we all started with one flag,” says Robb. “I was in the back,

but by the first turn, I’d worked my way up to the front.” (Robb is shown in the black-and-white photo sporting No. 44.) “It was 32 below at the top. I wore ski goggles and gloves. The key was jetting—I lived nearby, so I knew the right setting.” Robb eventually finished 16th overall, and sixth in the 500 class — and still has the results sheet to prove it!
