Jawa Ice Bike Goes on Display

After years of looking for an elusive Czech “ice bike,” we finally found an original racer in England, still carrying its patina from the last race. This 1970 Jawa DT 500cc ice speedway bike is powered by a 60-plus horsepower long-stroke single, and runs on methanol and Castrol R. It doesn’t have brakes of course but does have a two-speed transmission for the longer races. These bikes corner with incredible G forces, to an almost horizontal position, allowing the rider to take the corner just inches off the lake ice. The lethal one-inch spikes are mostly on the left side as in dirt track speedway racing, as they only turn left. Our bike was raced extensively in northern Europe and Russia, and remains in its “last-raced” condition.
